Great success for the UdS and PL Moritz Weber: Transformation Fund enables new center for quantum technologies

The Saarland state government is providing over 53 million euros from the Transformation Fund to support the establishment of a Center for Quantum Technologies (QuTe) at Saarland University. PL Moritz Weber from TRR 195 is one of the center’s initiators. The focus of the planned center is on quantum engineering and quantum software. Quantum engineering is the engineering science used to develop and build quantum computers and technologies – practically applicable systems that are particularly powerful thanks to the principles of quantum mechanics. Quantum software, on the other hand, refers to operating systems and programs for quantum computers that can solve problems that conventional computers fail to address or that require enormous computing time to solve. The center is interdisciplinary, with a broad understanding of quantum technologies. To leverage the potential of these technologies, a bridge is built between physics, mathematics, computer science, and engineering. The expertise of professors from these four disciplines at Saarland University will be expanded through new appointments. With the Jülich Research Center, Saarland University also has a renowned partner at its side: The Helmholtz Center will be involved with two institutes in Saarbrücken, fill joint professorships, and contribute its internationally recognized infrastructure.
